Telefèric de Montjuïc – Barcelona cable car

Barcelona has two mobile viewpoints. These are, of course, the Telefèric de Montjuïc and Aeri del Port cable cars. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the first one.

The Telefèric de Montjuïc is a Barcelona cable car that was opened in 1970. In its original version it had open cabins, which were operated successfully for the next several decades. Since 2004, they have been replaced by closed cabins, which increased the safety, comfort and efficiency of the cable car. The wagons that are in use today are also fully adapted to serve tourists with disabilities.

What you should know about

The Telefèric de Montjuïc ride is one of the best ways to get a bird’s-eye view of the Catalan capital. Using a cable car is also an effective means of transport, which will easily take you to the top of Montjuïc hill, located at an altitude of 173 m above sea level. And why is it worth visiting this place at all? First of all, because on the Montjuïc hill there are plenty of monuments and tourist attractions that will sooner or later attract anyone who wants to get to know the culture of Catalonia better.

Barcelona cable car route

Three stations await us on the 750-meter long Telefèric de Montjuïc cable car route:

  • Parc de Montjuïc – getting off at this cable car station, we will have the opportunity to visit several cultural attractions that are key places to visit on the Montjuïc hill. These include: Fundació Miró, the National Art Museum of Catalonia (Palau Nacional), Poble Espanyol and the Barcelona Ethnological Museum. There is also the so-called Olympic Ring (Anillo Olímpico) – a place that remembers the 1992 Olympic Games held here.
  • Castell de Montjuïc Parade – this is a key stop for people who would like to avoid climbing Montjuïc Castle that is located on a hill. In the area, we can also visit the botanical garden and the gardens called Los jardines de Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer and Jardines de Joan Brossa.
  • Parada Mirador – this station is located close to the green areas of Montjuïc Hill. There are some interesting viewpoints and terraces here that will allow you to see Barcelona from a different perspective once again.
